Members of Parliament team up to review healthcare

Saturday, August 19, 2006

An ad-hoc team of five Singapore Members of Parliament (MPs) has been formed to review the healthcare delivery system. The Healthcare Group (HCG) will be led by Minister of State (Health) Mr Heng Chee How and comprises Mdm Halimah Yacob, Dr Lam Pin Min, Dr Fatimah Lateef, Mr Sam Tan and Mrs Josephine Teo.

The group will work with the Ministry of Health to reach out to Singaporeans, to better understand their perspectives, and to identify areas and propose new initiatives for further improvement.

Specific areas of focus include the current financing policies (Medisave, MediShield and Medifund) and the role of individuals and their families, insurance, employers, healthcare providers and the Government in managing healthcare expenditure. Another priority is Eldershield#1 reform to better target it to meet the needs of the aging population.

#1. ElderShield was introduced by the Ministry of Health in June 2002. It is an opt-out severe disability insurance scheme for all Medisave account holders who are Singapore Citizens or Permanent Residents, designed to provide basic financial protection against expenses in the event of severe disabilities.
