Ministry of Education Raises Fees for Foreigners

The Singapore Ministry of Education (MOE) will be implementing a revised fee structure for public and government schools, polytechnics and universities. Non-Singapore citizens admitted from academic year 2008 will pay higher fees.

The changes for the tertiary institutes (polytechnics and universities) are :

Singapore to cut foreigners' medical subsidies

Singapore's Ministry of Health (MOH) will reduce medical subsidies for non-citizens at public hospitals and national medical centres starting next year. The medical services affected are :

  • inpatient services,
  • day surgery, and
  • specialist outpatient clinics (SOCs)

Emergency services at hospital emergency departments will be excluded from the changes.

Jurong Medical Centre Opens in Jurong West Central

In a pilot project by the Health Ministry to bring specialist healthcare services to the community, the new Jurong Medical Centre (JMC) at Jurong West Central 3 was officially opened on Sunday, 15 October 2006.

Costing $22 million, the new centre comes with advanced day surgery equipment, endoscopy services, a chronic disease management centre, x-ray facilities, dental care and eye care services (including cataract surgery).

US cancer specialist centre, West Clinic, opens medical centre in Singapore

United States cancer specialist centre, West Clinic, announced today a new joint venture cancer treatment centre in Singapore with Singapore's Excellence Healthcare Pte Ltd based in Camden Medical Centre. The centre aims to provide US-standard treatment for cancer patients in Southeast Asia.

Increase in diarrhoeal cases in schools and polyclinics

In advisories issued on 7 and 10 October, the Singapore Ministry of Health (MOH) reported an increase in the number of acute diarrhoea cases seen by polyclinics over the past month. With the recent spate of diarrhoeal outbreaks in four schools (Ang Mo Kio Secondary, Stamford Primary School, Maris Stella and ACS(Independent)), the Ministry of Health has advised the public to be vigilant about diarrhoeal illnesses.

From 1 December 2006, the day surgery claim limit for the non-surgical component is raised to $200. Here is the abstract of the news release.

In April this year, the Ministry of Health (MOH) raised the daily Medisave inpatient claim limit from $300 to $400. With medical innovation, some previously inpatient-based treatments can now be safely delivered as day surgeries.

Members of Parliament Team Up to Review Healthcare

An ad-hoc team of five Singapore Members of Parliament (MPs) has been formed to review the healthcare delivery system. The Healthcare Group (HCG) will be led by Minister of State (Health) Mr Heng Chee How and comprises Mdm Halimah Yacob, Dr Lam Pin Min, Dr Fatimah Lateef, Mr Sam Tan and Mrs Josephine Teo.

Singapore tightens control of Subutex (buprenorphine hydrochloride)

In a news release, the Singapore Government will impose stringent measures to curb the abuse of Subutex with effect from 14 August 2006.

Buprenorphine, the active ingredient in Subutex, will be made a Class A Controlled Drug under the First Schedule of the Misuse of Drugs Act (MDA).
