Medisave/Medishield Updates - 2008 April

The government has announced a set of changes to the Medisave/Medishield scheme. From 1 December, the medical insurance scheme Medishield's premiums will be raised together with increased claim limits.

Medisave Allowed for Outpatient Cancer MRI, CT, PET Scans

As announced by the Ministry of Health in February 2007, Singapore will allow cancer patients to use their Medisave accounts to pay for outpatient magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computerized axial tomography (CT/CAT) and positron emission tomography (PET) scans prescribed by their doctors. Up to $600 per year can be used for such scans. The change takes effect from 1 April 2008. Before this, patients may only use Medisave to pay their bills when such diagnostic scans are part of inpatient hospitalization treatments.

Singapore Plans Additional National Medical Specialty Centres

MOH has announced plans to create two new national medical specialist centres - one for heart diseases and one for cancer - in addition to the existing ones for the respective specialties, the National Heart Centre (NHC) and the National Cancer Centre (NCC).

The National University Hospital (NUH) situated at Kent Ridge / NUS has been tasked to set up these two second tertiary specialist centres.

National Cancer Centre (NCC)

The National Cancer Centre (NCC) of Singapore provides clinical services to cancer patients, conducts clinical and basic research, and develops public education programmes directed at the prevention and treatment of cancer. The NCC undertakes training and education of medical, radiation and surgical oncologists and other allied health personnel. The NCC is located within the Singapore General Hospital (SGH) compound in Outram Road.

Johns Hopkins Singapore International Medical Centre

Johns Hopkins Singapore (JHS) was established by The Johns Hopkins University in 1998 as its base of medical operations in South East Asia. JHS conducts research, education and provides patient care. The clinical arm was initially named as Johns Hopkins-NUH International Medical Centre and co-located with the National University Hospital (NUH), it is now named as Johns Hopskins Singapore International Medical Centre (IMC) and located at Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH). The IMC provides specialises in oncology (cancer) services for local and foreign private patients in Singapore.

Liberalisation of Medisave Limits and Coverage

The Ministry of Health will be increasing the Medisave Withdrawal Limits (MWL) in four areas.

  1. Inpatient daily withdrawal limit will increase from $400 to $450.
    With the increase, Medisave will, on average, cover 82%(currently 76%) of each B1 bill, and 66%(currently 57%) of each A/private-hospital ward bill.

US cancer specialist centre, West Clinic, opens medical centre in Singapore

12 October 2006

United States cancer specialist centre, West Clinic, announced today a new joint venture cancer treatment centre in Singapore with Singapore's Excellence Healthcare Pte Ltd based in Camden Medical Centre. The centre aims to provide US-standard treatment for cancer patients in Southeast Asia.
